Construction support procurement clauses and delivery mechanisms
Most sustainability impacts, and circular economy principles, can be achieved through the early planning and design phases of a construction project, or during the development of new products or services.
Realising these benefits in a highly complicated and diverse sector such as construction requires engagement among those who specify what they want, those who have responsibility for, or involvement with procuring products, materials or services and those in the supply chain who provide them.
It is therefore important to know how to use procurement as an effective lever when working towards organisational sustainability goals to reduce environmental, social and economic impacts, and create positive outcomes through the life span of projects.
Procuring resource efficient construction projects
Zero Waste Scotland has developed an online interactive guide that aims to support clients (public and private) and contractors to enhance waste reduction, reuse, and recycling through design and resource efficiency. It also encourages whole-life costing and circular economy approaches and outcomes. It does this through clearly defining procurement requirements for the client and examples for the contractor on how to respond.
Whole life costing in construction
Construction costs are only one type of cost to consider when building. Calculate your building and infrastructure lifetime costs using our whole-life costing tool.
