What to do with animal bedding and litter?

Animal waste and bedding can’t be put into general recycling but if you have a garden waste collection most councils accept soiled hay and sawdust from rabbit and guinea pig hutches. Otherwise, you can take it to a recycling centre that accepts garden waste.

There are different types of animal bedding and they need to be gotten rid of in different ways.
Pet blankets, towels and beds made from fabric can be recycled at textiles recycling points; but if your dog's bed is made from plastic for example, you will need to take it to your local recycling centre.

Dog charities are always looking for blankets, towels, teddies, beds and squeaky toys - so make sure you check if you can pass on items for reuse before you recycle them.

Meat, including bones, can be put in your food bin. Never put left over meat or marrow in your home compost, this could introduce harmful organisms and clog up your heap.
What about animal waste?
Pet waste such as cat litter should be bagged and put in the general waste bin. The same goes for dog faeces.
Don’t leave dog faeces on the path when you are out for a walk, this can lead to contamination of our parks. Always try to opt for biodegradable poop bags.
